Inspiration
Noticed a gap in the digital spiritual space — there are very few apps designed specifically for older adults seeking Hindu spiritual content. Many elderly users struggle to navigate complex social media platforms or get lost in endless feeds filled with unrelated — and sometimes inappropriate — content (like fashion, trends, or even soft-porn type material).
Yes, algorithms claim to personalize content “based on history,” but I’ve personally observed how platforms like Instagram aggressively push addictive, irrelevant, or unsuitable content — even when users aren’t looking for it.
That’s why I created BhaktiReel — a clean, simple, and spiritually focused app designed especially for seniors and devotees who want peace, not noise.
✨ One tap → Instant access to curated Hindu spiritual content ✨ No rocket science UI — easy for all ages ✨ No followers, no likes, no distractions — just devotion
This isn’t just an app. It’s a quiet sanctuary in a noisy digital world.
What it does
BhaktiReel is a one-tap spiritual sanctuary for Hindu devotees — especially seniors — who seek peace, devotion, and easy access to authentic spiritual content without distractions.
📱 One Tap. Pure Devotion. Open the app → instantly stream or view curated Hindu spiritual content: ✅ Bhajans & Aartis ✅ Festivals, rituals, and stories from scriptures
🎯 Designed for Simplicity & Serenity:
- No complex menus, no login required
- No follower counts, likes, comments, or social pressure
- No algorithm pushing fashion, ads, or inappropriate content
- Clean interface with large fonts and intuitive navigation — perfect for elderly users 🧘♀️ Digital Detox for the Soul In a world full of digital noise, BhaktiReel offers calm. It’s not about scrolling — it’s about centering. Not about engagement metrics — but inner enrichment.
How we built it
- Platform: Android (Kotlin/Java)
- UI/UX: Designed for large text, minimal taps, intuitive icons — tested with elderly users for accessibility
- Backend: Ktor Server + MongoDb deployed on AWS
- Media Hosting: 3rd party Streaming Service + self-hosted spiritual videos (curated from trusted sources)
- No Login System: Deliberately skipped user accounts to remove friction — open app → start watching
Key Features I Implemented:
- One-Tap Launch Screen: Immediately loads devotional content — no homepage maze
- Content Curation Engine: Manually reviewed & categorized videos — zero algorithm, zero recommendations
- We have 2 versions Basic and Paid, Basic has Full Screen Native video between reels , and in Paid its Ad Free.
Development Process:
- Researched pain points by talking to 15+ elderly users and temple volunteers
- Designed wireframes focused on 3-click max navigation
- Built MVP in 4 weeks using Android Studio + AWS
- Tested weekly with real users (mostly 60+ age group) → refined tap targets, auto-play behavior
- Launched on Play Store after 3 rounds of feedback + bug fixes
Challenges we ran into
- Finding copyright-safe spiritual content → solved by partnering/taking permission from original creator
- Making video load fast on low-end devices → optimized streaming + added SD quality toggle
- Ensuring no accidental exits or confusing menus → added “back = exit” logic and home button redundancy
Accomplishments that we're proud of
✅ Launched on Google Play Store — from idea to live app in under 2 months, built entirely solo with limited resources but unlimited devotion.
✅ Designed for real users, not metrics — tested with 15+ senior citizens (ages 40–60), who said: “I can open it and hear Krishna bhajans without clicking 5 times.”
✅ Zero algorithm. Zero clutter. — Created a truly distraction-free spiritual experience in a world full of noisy, addictive apps.
✅ 100% clean content guarantee — manually curated every video, rejecting anything commercial, sensational, or inappropriate — so elders feel safe and serene.
✅ No Like , No Followers , No login. No pressure. — broke the “growth at all costs” model to build something human-centered, not engagement-optimized.
✅ Proved simplicity wins — showed that tech doesn’t need to be complex to be powerful. Sometimes, one tap is all someone needs to find peace.
What we learned
Simplicity is harder than complexity.
Removing buttons, menus, and features took more thought than adding them. Every tap had to earn its place — especially for users with shaky hands or fading eyesight.
Tech should serve peace, not addiction.
I saw how “engagement-driven” apps manipulate attention. With BhaktiReel, I learned to measure success not by screen time — but by serenity delivered.
Elderly users are not “tech illiterate” — they’re “tech ignored”.
They don’t need dumbed-down apps — they need respectfully designed ones. Big fonts, clear icons, predictable flows — that’s not “basic,” that’s brilliant UX.
Spiritual tech needs ethical boundaries.
No data mining. No push notifications. I learned that protecting peace is as important as delivering content.
One person + one purpose = real impact.
I built this solo — and proved you don’t need a team or funding to create something meaningful. You just need never give up attitude and persistence.
What's next for BhaktiReel
