Inspiration
While studying Bangladesh and Global Studies (BGS), we realized that calculating population data like birth rates, death rates, and density can be tricky. We wanted to build a unified tool that combines everyday basic math with vital social and demographic statistics to make learning interactive and easy.
What it does
BGS Calculator is a multi-functional terminal-based application. It performs standard mathematical operations (+, -, *, /) and directly computes critical demographic metrics, including:
- Crude Birth Rate (CBR) and Crude Death Rate (CDR)
- Population Density
- Juvenile Delinquency (Kisor Oporad) statistical trends
How we built it
We built this entire application from scratch using Python 3. We utilized clean conditional logic structures to manage different user choices and ensured robust error handling to keep the system running smoothly.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring that the demographic formulas remained highly accurate while keeping the user input process simple, intuitive, and completely bug-free on the terminal.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of successfully bridging the gap between a real-world school curriculum (BGS) and computer programming. We managed to fit multiple complex calculators inside a single, lightweight Python script.
What we learned
Through this project, we deeply enhanced our problem-solving and algorithmic thinking in Python. We also learned how to plan a software project structure from ideation to a working prototype under a timeline.
What's next for BGS Calculator
We plan to upgrade this project from a terminal-based app to a fully interactive web application with charts and visual graphs. We also want to add real-time census data integration for automated analysis.
