Inspiration We wanted to make a survival game that feels like being stranded on an alien planet, where you have to explore, craft, and survive to escape. We wanted to make it different, so we added the VR option, where you can use your camera to play and navigate the game.

What it does Beyond the Stars is a first-person survival game set on Xylos. You can:

  • Explore different biomes
  • Gather resources and craft items
  • Survive hostile enemies at night
  • Trade materials with an alien merchant
  • Use your camera to control and move your character by moving in front of it
  • Escape the planet by completing the main objective

How we built it We built the game with JavaScript, Three.js, HTML, and CSS. The project is split into separate systems to keep everything organized:

  • World generation and biome logic
  • Player movement and combat
  • Crafting and inventory
  • Story and quest progression
  • UI and character customization
  • Camera-based movement controls
  • Challenges we ran into
  • One challenge was making the world feel large and interesting without slowing the game down. Another was balancing survival, crafting, combat, and camera controls so everything felt smooth and easy to use.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We’re proud that we created a full playable 3D game with:

  • Multiple biomes
  • Survival mechanics
  • Crafting
  • Character customization
  • Camera movement controls
  • A clear end goal (reach the space and escape from the planet)

What we learned We learned how to connect many game systems together and how important balancing is in a survival game. We also learned how to make camera input work as a fun control option.

What’s next for Beyond the Stars We want to add more story, more enemies, more items, and more polish to make the game feel even bigger and more complete.
