Inspiration

In an era where smartphones define how we talk, we often forget the essence of connection: eye contact, gestures, and breath. The inspiration for "BEYOND THE SCREEN" stems from the paradox of modern connectivity—while we are digitally closer than ever, we are emotionally drifting apart. We wanted to explore this through the story of Yuyeon, a mime artist who voluntarily speaks without words, and Sohyun, who is hard of hearing and lives in involuntary silence. This project was born from the desire to prove that true communication isn't a tech feature, but the act of fully meeting one another in the physical world, putting down the phone to notice the person in front of us.

What it does

"BEYOND THE SCREEN" is a 100% AI-generated short film (running time: 4:59) that visualizes the emotional gap created by technology and bridges it with somatic language. It tells the narrative of a couple disconnecting due to screen reliance and eventually reconnecting through a special mime performance where movement replaces speech and rhythm replaces music. The film intentionally minimizes on-screen text to focus on non-verbal signals—facial micro-expressions, the texture of breathing, and personal space—simulating a sensory experience that highlights how simple, physical cues can reduce misunderstanding and carry deeper meaning than digital text.

How we built it

This project represents the cutting edge of the Human-AI Co-creation workflow, directed by Gyumin Kim and his studio KYUM. We utilized GPT-5 to structure the narrative and emotional arc, ensuring the silent characters' feelings were translated into effective visual prompts. The core visual assets were generated using VEO3, which allowed us to maintain high temporal consistency and capture complex human movements like mime gestures, while RUMA ray2 was employed for post-processing to refine lighting and textures for a cinematic look. By leveraging this AI pipeline, we successfully completed a festival-quality film with a production budget of just $200.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was visualizing the concept of "silence" and maintaining character consistency throughout the film. Conveying the nuance of a silent stage purely through visuals required us to prompt the AI to focus on "quiet sounds" like fabric brushing or footsteps, converting auditory concepts into visual textures. Additionally, keeping the characters—Yuyeon and Sohyun—visually consistent across different shots and angles using generative video models required rigorous prompt engineering and seed control to ensure their identities remained stable for the entire 5-minute runtime.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud that this work has been recognized for both its narrative depth and technical excellence. The film won the Best Screenplay Award at GMAFF (2025) and achieved a double victory with the Best Picture & Popularity Awards at the Yeosu International Web Drama Film Festival. Beyond the awards, our greatest accomplishment was successfully using AI to evoke genuine empathy; the scene where Yuyeon turns the stage into a "language just for her" stands as a testament that AI can convey human warmth. The film's nomination at AI FILM AWARDS BALI further highlights our growing presence on the international stage.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that AI is not a replacement for human creativity but a powerful partner that can visualize the invisible. In directing a film about silence, we rediscovered that simple signals—gaze, breath, and movement—often carry more meaning than lines of dialogue. Translating these subtle human cues into prompt engineering taught us how to bridge the gap between technical commands and emotional storytelling, reinforcing our belief that technology and art can be woven into a single cinematic language.

What's next for BEYOND THE SCREEN

Moving forward, we aim to showcase "BEYOND THE SCREEN" at more global venues, including our upcoming participation as a semi-finalist at the Tianjin International Academic Film Festival. Director Gyumin Kim and Studio KYUM will continue to experiment with new audiovisual formats that rethink storytelling, potentially exploring interactive versions where the audience can experience the "silence" immersively. We are committed to producing more works like The Recursion of Gaze and How We Love, pushing the boundaries of how memory, emotion, and AI co-creation evolve together.
