Beyond the Blue was inspired by my fascination with the ocean and the incredible world that exists beneath its surface. I wanted to create something that makes learning about marine life feel like an actual exploration rather than simply reading information on a page. I built an interactive 3D ocean experience where users can dive through different ocean zones, from bright surface waters into the mysterious deep sea. As they descend, the environment changes and they encounter marine organisms that they can interact with to discover information about them. What I Learned Building this project taught me how to combine 3D graphics, animation, interaction, UI design, and educational content into one experience. I also learned how important performance optimization is when rendering many animated objects, particles, lighting effects, and environmental details at the same time. Most importantly, I learned that educational experiences don't have to feel like traditional educational software. Exploration and discovery can make learning much more engaging. How I Built It I built the project as a browser-based experience using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Three.js. The experience includes: 🌊 Multiple ocean depth zones with changing environments 🐟 Animated marine organisms 🔎 Interactive creatures with discoverable information ✨ Underwater particles, lighting, and atmospheric effects 📍 Depth progression through the ocean 📖 A journal system for tracking discoveries 🎨 A custom immersive underwater visual style I designed the experience around continuous exploration, rather than separate static pages. Challenges I Faced One of my biggest challenges was balancing visual quality with performance. An underwater environment can contain hundreds of objects, animations, particles, and effects, so I had to carefully optimize what was rendered and updated. Another challenge was making each ocean zone feel different while keeping the transition between them natural. I experimented with lighting, colors, atmospheric effects, depth fog, and environmental details to create the feeling of gradually descending deeper into the ocean. I also had to build a reliable interaction system that allowed users to identify and explore specific marine organisms while many creatures were moving throughout the environment. Ultimately, Beyond the Blue became my attempt to make the ocean feel less like something you're looking at and more like a world you can explore, discover, and understand.
