Inspiration

Beyond School was born from the realization that classrooms can't encompass all the knowledge and skills children need to thrive in life. While core academic subjects are essential, there's a whole world of valuable knowledge waiting to be explored. From financial literacy and healthy relationships to environmental awareness and basic home maintenance, Beyond School aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and the practical skills children will need to navigate their future. This platform uses interactive elements and engaging content to spark curiosity and empower children to become lifelong learners, ready to tackle any adventure life throws their way.

What it does

Beyond School is a platform designed to empower children to learn and explore beyond the limitations of a traditional classroom curriculum. We focus on topics typically not covered in schools like:

Mental health: Building self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
Financial literacy: Understanding money management and budgeting.
Home maintenance: Basic skills for maintaining a living space.
Sex education: Comprehensive and age-appropriate information.
Cooking: Learning healthy and delicious recipe creations.
Disaster preparedness: Understanding safety measures and building resilience in times of disaster.
Environmental awareness: Fostering a connection with nature and sustainable practices.

We have employed educative videos, engaging narratives and crucial information for each category in a concise manner giving children the liberty to learn, ask questions and understand each concept more clearly. To answer all queries instantly, we have integrated a chatbot using Google's Gemini API into the application.

How we built it

We started by analyzing traditional curriculums and pinpointing areas where practical skills and essential knowledge might be missing and identified topics crucial for a well-rounded education. The primary tech stack used for the user interface are HTML, CSS and Javascript. Beyond School offers a fun and informative chatbot powered by the Google Generative AI technology. To integrate this functionality, we utilized the Node.js runtime environment and the Google Generative AI Node.js library. We designed a child-friendly interface that is intuitive, visually appealing, and easy to navigate for young users.

Challenges we ran into

Keeping the content age-appropriate and informative enough to be truly engaging.
Deciding on the breadth of topics to cover and ensuring alignment with different age groups and learning needs.
Ensuring seamless integration of the Google Generative AI functionality with the Beyond School platform, particularly for a smooth user experience.
Ensuring inclusivity for children with diverse learning styles and abilities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a user interface that is both visually appealing and easy for children of different ages and abilities to navigate.
Successfully integration of the Gemini API to the application, resulting in a natural and informative chatbot experience for children.

What we learned

Throughout the development process, we discovered the challenges parents and teachers face in equipping children with essential life skills beyond the curriculum. This journey also led us to masterfully integrate Gemini Pro, an AI-powered chatbot, into the platform using Node.js and JavaScript.
