At the European Commission, we assist national consumer authorities address most common consumer problems. With the Covid-19 crisis, we have seen a tremendous increase in consumer scams. We have called on the major platforms (market places, social media, search engines) to address those scams and prevent them from reappearing. Platforms answered positively and explained all the measures taken.

Consumers must also play their part and be cautious but rogue traders find always new tricks. Most recently there have been reports of completely fake websites copying real ones and using the fears created by the Covid-19 to sell fake medicines or other products, often at high prices. But some of these products may be dangerous and some of these websites may only cash the orders and never deliver.

It would be good to have easy systems that consumers and other customers can use to detect such scams, and especially "copycat" websites.
