Inspiration
BetterTask was inspired by the need for a constant companion to help you stay on task while doing homework.
What it does
BetterTask uses a modified facial detection program from OpenCV that runs locally to identify when you are sitting and focusing at your computer, and gently reminds you to return if you leave or get distracted. Because everyone has different camera placement and screen sizes, you can fine-tune the sensitivity of the algorithm to perfectly suit your needs.
How we built it
BetterTask was built using only HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, along with a an open-source face detection model from OpenCV.
Challenges we ran into
As hackers new to hackathons and GitHub collaboration, we encountered numerous challenges in cooperation to avoid editing the same file at the same time and integration of open-source code into out vision for the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the simple, streamlined UX of BetterTask and it exceptional performance at keeping you on-task - it even had to send us some reminders!
What we learned
We learned lots about GitHub collaboration, open-source code, and about hackathons in general, knowledge we are sure to use in the future.
What's next for BetterTask
Future goals for BetterTask include phone detection, game detection, and an application for use outside of a web browser.
