Inspiration
As a team of four veteran special educators with 60 years of experience combined, we've lived the reality of teacher burnout. We've seen districts adopt clunky, disjointed platforms that only add to teacher paperwork. School districts spend $3.2 billion annually on special education compliance issues and lawsuits. Why? Because 68% of IEPs contain errors, and case managers are managing this complexity with multiple platforms, spreadsheets and sticky notes. We’re tired of the administrative burden stealing time from what truly matters: our students. So we decided to build the solution ourselves: an intuitive, all-in-one AI case management system designed to give educators their time back.
What it does
BetterSpED provides a solution that brings the entire IEP lifecycle onto one intelligent, collaborative platform. From initial scheduling to final report drafting, our system is built to give educators their time back. It dramatically slashes the administrative workload and paperwork, directly boosting the time teachers can spend on student intervention. By creating a unified hub for all teachers and service providers, BetterSpED ensures compliance, mitigates the risk of costly errors, and offers a high-impact, affordable solution essential for today's school districts.
How we built it
We leveraged Bolt.new to rapidly translate our on-the-ground expertise into a functional application. We built BetterSPED by dividing the project into specialized areas: scheduling, goal writing, report drafting, and student dashboards, with each educator focusing on one portion. In addition we collaborated frequently to ensure every feature was intuitive and addressed a real-world pain point.
Challenges we ran into
Our development faced several challenges. Being new to AI, with three of four team members having no prior experience in such technical projects, steep learning curves emerged, particularly with syncing and forking code. Finding consistent meeting times among our four busy lives also required significant dedication. The limitations to Bolt’s platform made it challenging to collaborate as a team, making integration of outside APIs difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite these hurdles, we are incredibly proud of our accomplishments. We significantly enhanced our ability to craft precise prompts and interact productively with Bolt. We also gained new skills, including creating VS Code, animations, and voiceovers using Flow and ElevenLabs. We are confident we are ahead of the curve; no existing platform offers this comprehensive functionality, positioning us as change-makers for the special education world.
What we learned
Through this journey, we learned the immense potential of AI in developing powerful systems. Crucially, we realized that the challenges BetterSPED addresses are not unique to special education but are shared by educators across all fields.
What's next for BetterSPED: AI-Powered IEP Platform
Next for BetterSPED: AI-Powered IEP Platform is integrating with commonly used systems like Google Calendar and district-wide school platforms. We also plan to build out a sophisticated AI agent. Our ultimate hope is for BetterSPED to become a functional and accessible solution for school districts everywhere, transforming special education through better teachers, better instruction, better management, and enhanced collaboration, leading to a brighter future for all students. School systems are just beginning to explore AI. We built the only platform they'll ever need, and we built it first. The future of special education case management is here.
