Inspiration

Coming into college without much experience managing our own money and being away from our families drove the idea for this project. Trying to stay on top of our classes, while working jobs, needing to prepare in advance to buy necessities, allocate money for things we want, and save for the future and emergencies, can be a big headache sometimes. When the money is not distributed efficiently, it can make one struggle to make ends meet. The idea was that we thought it would be cool if there were a system that colleges provide to students to help them with money management in a simple way, or at least get an idea of how to manage their money and help students realize how important it is to manage their money.

What it does

The project was uncompleted but the goal for the project was that when you are not logged in, you would be shown a generic homepage, but when you log in it would be a page of the likeness of your college if the college implemented the system or just another generic page for personal use. When logged in you would have a menu where you go to your finances and it would show you your account balance, pay period, budget for the current pay period, spending limits, current money spent, and Transactions (and details).

Challenges we ran into

We are beginners at the hackathon, so we spent much of the day going to workshops trying to figure out what we wanted to do and what technologies we would need to consider using. We decided on what to do quite late so we did not give ourselves enough time to properly become acclimated with techto order to complete the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It may not be much of an accomplishment, but we are proud that we came to the hackathon and attempted this new and interesting challenge. We are also proud that we put time and effort into learning about these new technologies.

What we learned

We learned about some technologies we had not used before such as React and Apache Tomcat and learned more about ones we were familiar with such as HTML, Java, and IntelliJ.

What's next for BetterFinance

We will continue to work on it so that the project is fully functional so that we can use the system ourselves and even extend it to help students at our school.
