Inspiration
Inspiration
Online shopping should be simple, but instead it often feels overwhelming. I spend hours jumping between Amazon, eBay, Temu, Walmart and more, reading endless descriptions and juggling different prices. Ads, “items left in cart” reminders, and tracking only add to the pressure. What I really wanted was a push toward clarity: privacy, simplicity, and confidence in my choices. That’s what inspired BetterBuy.
What it does
BetterBuy is a private, AI-powered shopping assistant that helps users:
- Save products from any website
- Automatically translate product details if needed
- Summarize long descriptions into concise insights
- Convert currencies to USD for clear price comparisons
- Generate side-by-side recommendations
All of this happens locally with Gemini Nano, ensuring complete privacy and control over the shopping experience.
How we built it
We built BetterBuy as a Chrome Extension powered by Chrome’s built-in AI APIs:
- Summarizer API → cleans up product descriptions.
- Translator API → detects and translates non-English text into English.
- Rewriter API → transforms messy details into pros/cons and highlights.
- Prompt API → generates personalized comparisons and recommendations.
We also layered in currency detection and conversion so that prices from different countries can be compared fairly.
Challenges we ran into
- Handling product text from different sites and languages consistently.
- Managing price normalization across multiple currencies without confusing users.
- Troubleshooting local AI model availability and storage requirements in Canary.
- Designing a UI that balances simplicity with detail for decision-making.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working prototype that saves, summarizes, and compares products across platforms.
- Implemented translation + price conversion for global shopping.
- Delivered a privacy-first, offline AI assistant powered by Gemini Nano.
- Designed a clean interface showing AI-powered comparisons in seconds.
What we learned
- How to chain multiple AI APIs (Summarizer, Translator, Rewriter, Prompt) into a seamless workflow.
- The value of privacy-first design for user trust.
- That decision fatigue in shopping is very real — even simple summaries and price normalization can make a huge difference.
What's next for BetterBuy
- Expanding support for more e-commerce sites and product categories.
- Adding preference-based recommendations (e.g., best budget option, best quality).
- Building visual comparison tables with product images and pros/cons.
- Offering offline deal tracking while maintaining privacy.
- Polishing the extension for public release so anyone can shop smarter, faster, and ad-free.
