We created Betterboxd to amend the many flaws of the known and seldom loved movie-rating app: Letterboxd. The goal was to transform it into a hub for movie-lovers by improving the app's user interface.

Letterboxd doesn't help you find new movies to watch, so we added features that help you find more movies, ones you'd actually like! We added more ways to search for movies: filtering by streaming service, vibe, favorite actors and directors. It's much easier to see what your friends are currently watching- their labeled, colored profiles are clearly displayed on your dashboard alongside curated lists and reviews. There's even a random movie generator for those who crave a side of spontaneity with their entertainment, and get this- you can even filter results by streaming service and genre!

What's more, your profile page is organized to display what you like from a moment's glance: your top films, creatives, and genres, alongside awards you've accrued from actually spending time on this app. As you create reviews, you can favorite movies to add them under "Top Films" on your profile, which is an upgrade because Letterboxd only allots you four favorite films for your profile. You can also indicate where you watched the film, if it was at home, in a theater, with friends, or elsewhere for an added perk.

Lastly, we gave it a makeover fit for a Hollywood star by emulating that golden-age aesthetic in our color palette and font choices. This creates a warmer, thematic atmosphere that encourages users to hop on the app and stay a while. Not too long, though- there are many movies to be watched, and Betterboxd will present you with your next favorite film in ten seconds flat.
