Overview : Better Choice is a Google chrome extension that helps users make healthier food choices while shopping online by flagging products that contain harmful additives, banned substances, or allergens. It can highlights better alternatives and tracks user preferences over time. The recommendations BetterChoice Score will be personalized based on: Pre-existing medical conditions, current medications and other N factors.

Goals:

Increase HealthSpan Empower users to avoid consuming harmful chemicals Build personalized health-first shopping experience Why Better Choice?

In the U.S., high exposure to ultra-processed, long shelf-life foods — often marketed as “healthy” because they contain added protein, fiber, or vitamins—can mask deeper risks. Many of these products contain FDA-approved additives, preservatives, or emulsifiers that are banned or strictly regulated in other countries due to links with inflammation, hormone disruption, or metabolic diseases.

What’s missing is informed transparency: the nutritional benefits are front and center, but the chemical trade-offs that harm long-term health remain hidden. This disconnect contributes to why healthspan is declining in the U.S.—people aren’t just eating more, they’re unknowingly eating worse.

How we built it Google Chrome plugin + Firebase + JavaScript + TypeScript + FoodFacts + HTML + Figma

Challenges we ran into Due to time constraints we couldn't integrate other online e-commerce platforms like walmart and target. Accomplishments that we're proud of Build a working Chrome plugin which would provide BetterChoice details (Score and allergen, Additives ) on all the food products on Amazon.

What we learned Building personalize Engine would really help increase the HealthSpan. They scope to build a ecosystem around this problem.

What's next for Better Choice 1)Mobile app to track offline food choices and habits. 2) Integrate the fitness wearable data. 3) Build personalize engine which would take pre medical conditions
