Just as a good lawyer translates legal language into clear advice, Better Call Saul AI breaks down Quebec’s laws in a way that’s easy to understand—so you can know your rights and make informed decisions, anytime.

How we built it

The simplicity of Better Call Saul AI hides a deep, well-crafted system designed for accuracy, accessibility, and efficiency. Our development approach focused on three core pillars: precision, user-friendliness, and cultural relevance.

🔹 Foundation & Frontend: We started with a Tempo Labs template to kickstart our project. From there, our Lead Fullstack Developer, Adam, continuously refined and expanded the platform using React, Vite, and TypeScript, ensuring a smooth and responsive user experience.

🔹 AI & Backend: Behind the scenes, Lead Backend Developers, Nessrine and Ayoub, worked tirelessly to perfect our AI. Using real-time web scraping and NLP, they built a system that provides accurate, up-to-date legal answers tailored to Quebec laws.

🔹 Accessibility & Localization: Our final team member, Jordan, ensured that Better Call Saul AI goes beyond just legal accuracy. He integrated speech-to-text transcription with Deepgram, making sure our AI understands Quebec slang, regional accents, and everyday language, making legal guidance accessible to everyone.

Every line of code and every AI decision was built with one goal in mind: empowering Quebec citizens with instant, reliable legal knowledge.

Challenges we ran into

Building Better Call Saul AI came with its own set of unique challenges. As students with limited resources, we had to push the boundaries of efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility while staying true to our vision.

🔹 Refining the Website for Speed & Usability – Creating a fast, responsive, and intuitive UI with React, Vite, and TypeScript meant optimizing every aspect of our front-end while ensuring seamless user interaction.

🔹 Working with Limited Resources – As a student-led team, we had to be strategic in using free-tier services, open-source tools, and efficient development workflows to build a high-quality AI without big-budget infrastructure.

🔹 Building a Web Scraper for Legal Data – Legal information is vast and constantly evolving. Developing a custom scraper to extract the most relevant, up-to-date Quebec legal information was a major breakthrough for our AI’s accuracy.

🔹 Real-Time Voice Chat Integration – Implementing Deepgram’s live transcription and speech recognition posed challenges in handling accents, slang, and varying speech patterns, but we fine-tuned it for precise, user-friendly responses.

🔹 Balancing Our Time as Students – Juggling coursework with development was no small feat. Through efficient task management and teamwork, we kept the project moving forward while maintaining a healthy balance.

Through problem-solving, constant iteration, and a passion for accessibility, we overcame these challenges to create an AI that empowers Quebec citizens with instant, reliable legal knowledge.
