Inspiration
With the rise of recent criminal events around campus and the general feeling of uneasiness within our community of women traveling alone at night, we wanted to look into this topic and find some ways to alleviate this issue.
After doing some reading on the topic, we came across sentiments like these from people:
- ‘I don’t relax until I reach my destination [when traveling alone]'
- ‘Having my hand on my phone in my pocket feels like a bit of security'
- ‘It’s difficult for women [to travel alone]’
We thought this is an important issue to solve to support and foster safety within communities with a technology that is easily accessible to everyone.

What it does
BeSafe is a mobile application that will add a layer of security to your day-to-day travel. Create a New Journey when you are feeling unsafe and play pre-recorded audio/video calls. Press and hold the SOS button for 3 seconds when you are truly in danger, and help will come. Get your friends and family to create fake recordings for you that you can access later!
How we built it
We designed BeSafe with Figma, with a lot of research into what makes a product accessible and the problem that we are trying to tackle
Challenges we ran into
The biggest problem we encountered was trying to create too many aspects of the application simultaneously. We had a lot of features planned for this application, and we were ambitious with what we could accomplish, but the scale of the project and the time crunch quickly made us realize we couldn't possibly accomplish everything. After talking with a mentor, we decided to narrow down our features and chose just one.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting a working prototype on Figma (YAAAY!!)
What we learned
Learning new features on Figma, such as the different animations we included, and learning to collaborate on Figma with other designers. Some of our team members learned how to navigate the Flutter documentation and learned widgets such as drop-down lists
What's next for BeSafe
There are a lot of great features that we would love to include in BeSafe. We will list some below:
- danger zone mapping
- the ability to reroute your trip based on danger and safe zone
- the ability to message friends to keep them assured that you have safely arrived at your destination
- fully functional mobile application deployed on iOS and Android
Built With
- dart
- figma
- flutter
