Project Story
About the Project
Inspiration
Strawberries are increasingly cultivated in Pakistan, especially in regions like Swat, Abbottabad, and Kasur. However, these crops are highly susceptible to diseases like leaf spot, powdery mildew, and blight. For local farmers, identifying these diseases early is a significant challenge due to limited access to agricultural expertise and resources. Inspired by the potential of AI to solve real-world problems, this project focuses on providing a practical and affordable solution to address this critical agricultural issue in Pakistan.
What We Learned
Through research and development of this idea, we learned:
- Agricultural Challenges in Pakistan: Limited access to disease detection tools and the heavy reliance on traditional farming methods make crop health management difficult for Pakistani farmers.
- AI’s Role in Precision Agriculture: Technologies like YOLO and explainable AI (XAI) can bridge the gap between traditional farming practices and modern technology.
- Localized Solutions Are Key: The success of AI in agriculture depends on creating solutions tailored to local challenges, such as infrastructure limitations and farmer awareness.
How We Envisioned It
Localized Data Collection
A comprehensive dataset would be built by collaborating with local farmers and agricultural experts, focusing on collecting images of strawberry diseases common in Pakistan.AI-Driven Detection
- A YOLOv5 model would be trained on this dataset to detect diseases like leaf spot and blight.
- Grad-CAM (Explainable AI) would be integrated to make the model's predictions interpretable, so farmers can see why a specific disease was flagged.
- A YOLOv5 model would be trained on this dataset to detect diseases like leaf spot and blight.
Accessible Platform
A simple mobile app or web platform would be developed to allow farmers to upload photos of their crops and instantly receive detection results with actionable insights.
Challenges and Vision
Data Availability
Collecting high-quality, labeled images of strawberry diseases from Pakistani farms is a significant challenge but essential to ensuring the solution's relevance.Farmer Education
Many farmers are not familiar with AI tools, so creating an intuitive and easy-to-use interface is critical for adoption.Infrastructure Constraints
Since internet access is limited in rural areas, an offline mode or lightweight AI deployment would be necessary to make the solution accessible.
The Impact
If implemented, this solution could empower strawberry farmers in Pakistan to:
- Detect diseases early, reducing crop losses and improving yields.
- Make informed decisions about pest management and crop health.
- Contribute to sustainable farming practices through AI-powered precision agriculture.
