Inspiration
We realized that only only 17.1% of public high school students have scored above average (3 or more) on their AP tests, leaving a huge opportunity for a more efficient tutoring service.
What it does
Matches you with tutors in the area and gives the student power in deciding who he/she would like to be tutored by, allows high school students to become tutors themself, flexibility every time you use the website to be tutored again, gives detailed information on the tutor as well as student ratings and an elevator pitch by the tutor themself so the student can make an accurate decision.
How I built it
Built the matchmaking system between students and tutors through java and integrated into sql, displayed tutor profiles through html + php + workspace (third party), and used Medium for communication between users technology.
Challenges I ran into
Establishing encryption to allow for anonymous payments and assistance through the website, understanding the expandability of the framework to larger applications, converting/integrating the code between different languages and databases.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Developing the matchmaking algorithm that no tutoring service provides at the moment in large scale, having a live website with full vendor-based services, providing external materials (i.e. blog posts, FAQ's) to enhance user experience/comprehension of our mission.
What I learned
Learned how to interact with databases and programmatically transfer data between one source to the next.
What's next for Berri Tutors
Scaling the location to partner with more tutors, creating a video distribution platform for educational properties.
