Echoes of the Forgotten: Bengal Famine 1943
Inspiration
"Echoes of the Forgotten" is a digital storytelling project that brings to life the Bengal Famine of 1943 — a tragic and often overlooked chapter in South Asian history. We were inspired by the resilience of those who lived through this catastrophe and the importance of uncovering marginalized historical voices.
Our website aims to humanize the statistics and retell the forgotten stories of hunger, survival, and injustice through vivid visuals, interactive timelines, and personal testimonies. We wanted to explore history as dates, events, and human experiences that echo through generations.
How We Built It
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build a responsive, multi-page website. The website structure includes separate pages for an overview, timeline, personal stories, causes, and references. To ensure an immersive experience, we focused heavily on storytelling layout, colors, transitions, and accessibility.
We carefully curated images and visual elements, and we styled the site using a palette inspired by vintage tones found in archival photos. CSS transitions and layout patterns inspired by City of Sydney Digital Collections were implemented to enhance the aesthetic.
What We Learned
- How to bring historical narratives to life through web design
- Writing accessible and clean semantic HTML
- Advanced CSS techniques including animations, layout responsiveness, and image alignment
- Deep research and source validation in history-based digital storytelling
Challenges We Faced
- Finding high-quality, copyright-safe historical images that work (Wikimedia Commons failed at times!)
- Creating a consistent layout and responsive design across all pages
- Balancing design, storytelling, and historical accuracy in a sensitive topic
- Working solo on multiple aspects — design, research, development, and writing
