Inspiration
Our inspiration is based on the Human benchmark test where it can measure your cognitive skills such as reaction time, memory, how fast you can type, and even making you smarter than a chimpanzee. In order to have a competitive aspect of it we added lives and a scoring system based on how long you live for.
What it does
So how this game works is by having a temple run an endless level mechanic while running into these barriers or gates. In order to unlock these gates or barriers, you have to do these puzzles that are based on the human benchmark test like reaction time, typing test, and even memorizing a word sequence. You will also have 3 lives and a monster chasing after you. How you lose the game is by either losing those 3 lives by failing all the games you encountered or getting in contact with the monster.
How we built it
We built this game using Roblox Studio. The reason we use it and not using VS code is because ROBLOX has it own studio where all of the game building models that we need are already there since it is made by its own community. ROBLOX studio is also very versatile in making any game possible due to some games like DOORS and Prison Break. The programming language that we used is LAUA which has the language format of python but has the structure of C or C++.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge that we ran into is none of us know how to make a game in ROBLOX nor they ever coded in LAUA. Another issue is when we are importing functions for certain gates into our game, it could be bad because it can one cause a lot of debugging issues and we were also new to building a ROBLOX game and we didn't even know how each feature that ROBLOX Studio works.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One thing that we are proud of since this is the majority of the team's first hackathon project and we manage to make a project in under 3 days which is really shocking. Another thing that we are proud of is learning a new language that we never heard of and also making a video game. Due to this project being a unique idea that has never heard in the ROBLOX community
What we learned
One thing that we learn is making a game in ROBLOX. From customizing its textures and adding the background and making each obstacle has its own function. Another thing that we learned is LAUA which is a programming language that ROBLOX uses to make their games functional. Due to me and my teammates having experience with C++ and Python we kind of learn this language quite fast. One last thing that me and my teammate learned is how making a video is more advanced than just simple functionality but also putting your creative mind into making games unique and having its own gimmick.
What's next for Benchmark Escape!
Sooner or later in the future we will add more puzzles that are based on the human benchmark test and also different themes that will make your experience unique. Another thing that we will add is a leader board for people who wanna get competitive and flex their scores on other people.
