BeMindful
Stay true to your mind, body and soul with BeMindful
Our mission
We believe that mindfulness and mental health should be a top priority, especially for students. It can feel like there aren't enough hours hours in the day to achieve everything you want, and it can be particularly hard to make time for your mental health. Our mission is to make mindfulness and wellness more achievable by prompting users to complete a daily wellness activity, and then documenting their progress. The activity prompts sent out once each morning, and users have all day to complete it. By giving users the whole day to complete a task that shouldn't be more than 20 minutes, it doesn't carry urgency and stress, which is counterproductive to our goal.
How it works
When the user opens our application, they see the prompt and the webcam. Then as they complete the task, they can take a photo using the camera, which is then downloaded to their phone and sent to the gallery. In the gallery, today's photo will be displayed at the top along with the prompt, while the collection of past challenges are collected at the bottom, and labeled with their corresponding prompts. There is also a counter of how many wellness activities they have completed, including the one they did that day.
Why we built it
Improving your mental health can feel daunting, with intense online advice and lists of "essential" daily routines that are unachievable to most people. Not everyone can afford expensive yoga and medication classes, or spend hours painting to destress. With BeMindful, the daily wellness activities can take up to 20 minutes, breaking down the end goal into actionable tasks that benefit the user over time. These tasks include taking a walk, having a cup of tea, reading 20 pages of a book, and more. Users can try different activities when they fit into their schedule while discovering what works for them. Then, by documenting their progress in the gallery, users can feel accomplished seeing everything they have completed. By only measuring their own progress, users can't compare themselves to others. We know that everyone is on their own path and moving at their own speed, and we want them to see value in their personal journey.
What's next
We hope to make BeMindful a more reflective experience by adding a journal tool, in which the user can write a short caption about how they felt doing the activity, and rate their experience out of 5. Their reflection will be tied to their photo, and in the gallery they will be able to click on the photo and read what they wrote that day. This encourages self reflection, and can help the user make deeper insights into their perception of themself and their environment. By maintaining minimal features, the user can have a simple experience that doesn't overwhelm them, and avoid anything that would make the application feeling daunting. We plan to keep BeMindful centred around the user and their mental health.
