Belief Kit — Halal, Vegan, Kosher, Vegetarian & Allergy Food Label Scanner
Hey everyone 👋 I'm Farhaan.
I'm a machine learning researcher based in India (previously did research at Mitacs in Canada and Microsoft India).
Back in 2024, when I moved to Canada for my research internship, I had to manage grocery shopping in unfamiliar supermarkets for the first time. To make things interesting, I eat strictly Halal, and my roommate had a gluten allergy.
Every single grocery run turned into an exhausting 45-minute chore. We would stand in the aisles squinting at tiny font on the back of cereal boxes and sauces. Existing scanner apps only checked one specific diet at a time—so we found ourselves juggling two different apps and still manually googling obscure chemical names and E-numbers (like E471 or hidden barley malt).
I realized that almost no home or shared apartment eats just one way anymore. One person is Halal or Kosher, someone is Vegan, and someone else has a dairy or nut allergy.
So, I built the tool we wished we had: Belief Kit.
It’s an independent, privacy-conscious mobile tool designed specifically for multi-dietary households:
- One Scan for the Whole House: You can set up custom profiles for yourself, family members, or roommates (Halal, Kosher, Vegan, Vegetarian, plus 14 major allergens like gluten, dairy, nuts, etc.). In a single scan, it tells you exactly who can and can't eat it.
- No Arbitrary "Health Scores": I deliberately avoided giving foods a 0–100 score. The app doesn't preach or judge—it just gives an honest, objective breakdown of the ingredients and flags hidden animal derivatives or allergens.
- Camera Scan for Unlisted Items: If a barcode isn't in the database yet, you can point your camera directly at the ingredient label to analyze it on the spot.
