Project Story

Inspiration

The idea for Bela Island came from a fascination with worlds that feel both natural and magical. We drew inspiration from paradisiac beaches, volcanic landscapes, historical ruins, western villages, and lively cultural gatherings. The challenge was to bring all these different atmospheres together in one immersive world — a place that could host endless stories.

What it does

Bela Island provides an open world environment designed for exploration, creativity, and interaction. It features a volcano, castle ruins, beaches, villages, and an urban hub. The world includes a basic shooting interaction for fun gameplay moments and leaderboards to encourage competition between players. The space acts as a flexible stage where users can host adventures, events, or artistic showcases, and remix it into new narratives.

How we built it

  • Concept & Design: sketched out a modular island that could integrate multiple biomes.
  • 3D Modeling: created low- and mid-poly assets to ensure visual quality while keeping performance in mind.
  • Game Mechanics: coded interactions such as spawning triggers, a basic shooting mechanic, and a leaderboard system.

Challenges we ran into

  • Coding interactions and game mechanics: building logic for how players move, interact, shoot, and track scores on leaderboards.
  • Modeling a complex world: keeping environments detailed without overwhelming performance budgets.
  • Cohesion: blending natural, historical, and urban zones without them feeling disconnected.
  • Scale management: ensuring every area feels meaningful without being too vast or too empty.
  • Optimization: balanced polygon budgets, applied LOD strategies, and tested for frame rate stability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a cohesive open world that merges different environments seamlessly.
  • Added a shooting mechanic and leaderboard system that bring replayability and friendly competition.
  • Designed a stage that is not only explorable, but also remixable for new narratives.
  • Learned to push creative ambition while respecting technical limits.

What we learned

  • World design is storytelling: every rock, building, and path tells part of the story.
  • How to optimize assets for performance while keeping immersion intact.
  • That collaboration between design and coding is essential for building believable interactive spaces.

What's next for Bela Island

  • Expanding the shooting system into more polished gameplay loops (targets, challenges, co-op).
  • Improving leaderboards with seasonal rankings and rewards.
  • Adding more interactive systems such as quests, collectibles, and multiplayer events.
  • Expanding the biomes and environments to include hidden caves, underwater areas, and sky platforms.
  • Opening the world as a community hub where others can build, remix, and tell their own stories.
  • Expanding the team.
