BeInSync - One Swipe Mutual Mentorship

Inspiration

The Challenge

Craft a platform linking students, professionals, tech firms, and schools, driving skill growth, mentorship, and networking in Buffalo’s tech and start-up landscape.

  • Women only make up 28% of the STEM workforce, are less likely to take a STEM Major in college, especially in Computer Science and engineering.
  • According to a Pew Research Center survey, 29% of American workers have undergone a significant career change, with 35% of those under 30 having done so. However, it is always a very difficult road!
  • 46% of the startups struggle to find qualified talent, and the cost of a bad hire can reach up to 30% of the first-year earnings.

What it does

An interactive platform, BeInSync, where recruiters, professionals, and students can easily create a profile and connect to grow as they mentor others, be mentored, and get hired!

  • Anyone who wants to be mentored in a certain area will list down their requirements, and based on their needs, they will be mapped and suggested mentor profiles.
  • If the mentor and mentee are a match, then a chat window opens connecting them so that they can schedule the duration of the mentorship sessions and decide meeting times.
  • Women in STEM who were limited by cultural or stereotypical boundaries can easily standout and get a career direction or develop a skillset at their fingertips. They will also have the ability to report frauds, so there's no reason to stand back anymore!
  • Professionals looking forward to changing their career track will not have to spend countless hours thinking about what's next or fear lack of guidance. They can connect with an expert in that area and hit the ground running.
  • The incentive behind a good mentorship session from both sides will be in terms of ratings given by both for each other's communication skills, grasping ability, punctuality, drive to learn, and grow.
  • These ratings can be viewed by everyone using the app, including recruiters of both big companies and tech startups.
  • This way, tech startups can see the growth of an individual in the app and tap into the talent pool, hiring the right people without wasting resources. If someone values a quick learner more for a particular role than an expert, they can see an individual's learning curve while swiping, and once they match, they can schedule interviews.
  • This app will particularly benefit the startups in Buffalo by connecting them to some of the biggest pools of talent within Universities.
  • Professionals from big companies can mentor high school students and prepare them for their future requirements or at least nudge them in the right direction.
