Inspiration
Behind the Wings was inspired by the contrast between the glamorous image of top fashion models and the hidden reality behind the runway. We wanted to create a film that reveals the physical and emotional cost of living inside an industry obsessed with beauty, and to use AI not as a gimmick but as a new way to reconstruct and tell these stories with authenticity.
What it does
The film gives audiences a deeply human, emotional journey into the lives of women who were once the faces of perfection. It combines interviews, backstage moments, and AI-generated visual reconstructions to immerse the viewer in a world that looks familiar, but feels surprisingly raw and honest.
How I built it
I studied a wide range of interviews, testimonies, and backstage accounts from Victoria’s Secret shows, then used advanced AI tools to reconstruct a narrative based on these real facts. This approach allowed me to create scenes that feel authentic—though entirely generated—and to visualize moments that were never captured on camera, while staying true to the essence of the models’ experiences.
Challenges I ran into
The hardest part was balancing authenticity and reconstruction. We had to constantly question: where is the line between documentary truth and artistic interpretation? On a technical side, creating realistic, cinematic imagery with AI required hundreds of iterations and solving issues of coherence, continuity, and emotional resonance.
Accomplishments that I am proud of
I am proud that the film doesn’t look like an “AI experiment,” but like a real documentary with depth, emotion, and narrative drive. I succeeded in turning a highly technical process into something invisible — so the audience can focus on the story, not the tools.
What we learned
I learned (AGAIN) that AI can expand the boundaries of documentary filmmaking without replacing its human core. The most important ingredient is still empathy, listening, and respect for the stories being told. Technology only works when it is in service of those voices.
What's next for Behind the Wings
I plan to continue developing the project into a series, exploring different aspects of the fashion world and its human cost. Beyond fashion, the method we built can be applied to other industries and untold stories where cameras were never allowed — opening new ways of telling the hidden histories of our time.
