Inspiration

Our mounting climate change crisis is often seen as something which can be attributed to our major industries and their reckless use of fossil fuels. However, this doesn't exonerate each of us from our personal responsibility to protect our environment. Individuals ultimately play the largest part in fighting climate change through their cumulative actions, like by supporting sustainable brands and voting with their wallet to send a message to large industries. We wanted to encourage individuals to incorporate environmentally friendly actions in their daily lifestyle. These actions aren't meant to be a burden but are rather structured as a fun way for people to become educated on how they can be more conscious toward the environment. Additionally, we were motivated by the power of positive peer pressure and the propensity for people to join in activities along with their friends/community.

What it does

BeGreen gives daily prompts for an environmentally friendly activity that users can complete to earn Green Points. Upon receiving this prompt, users complete the task, take a picture, and upload for their community to see! BeGreen also offers other various activities which can be completed for GreenPoints, which all contribute toward leveling up and having a higher BeGreen level!

How we built it

We built this cross-platform app using React-native, fully written in Javascript.

Challenges we ran into

Some of us were working with React-Native for pretty much the first time so there was a steep learning curve, alleviated by tutelage from his fellow teammates (:D). We had troubles getting our application working storing/retrieving from Firebase, as well as interfacing with the device camera.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of our concept and its motivation, as well as the execution of the parts of the app we were able to flesh out in the allotted time. The feature set is robust and with enough time we would have completed a very compelling environmental social media app.

What we learned

We learned how to use React-Native in the context of a cross-platform phone application. Through our research for the project, we also learned a lot about the ramifications of our daily lifestyle on the environment.

What's next for BeGreen

We're cornering the market.

No but in reality we'd like to flesh out our point system and community leaderboard features to make it more of a social experience!
