Difficult workplace conversations are easier when you can practise first.
BeforeYouSay helps managers find their words before speaking with a colleague.
What it does
Choose a workplace situation or describe your own.
Practise the conversation by text or voice with an AI participant.
Get feedback based on what you actually said.
How we built it
Built the app with Expo, React Native and Firebase.
Used OpenAI for practice conversations and feedback, and LiveKit, AssemblyAI and Sarvam AI for voice.
Drew on frameworks including SBI, DESC and GROW to write reviewed goals for different kinds of conversations.
Challenges we ran into
A single checklist did not fit every conversation. For example, saying no clearly does not always require offering an alternative.
We made the feedback check what the person actually said against goals for that situation, without forcing an apology, agreement or next step when it was not needed.
We also had to handle pauses, interruptions and delays during spoken practice.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built the full flow from describing a situation to practising and reading feedback.
Got spoken conversations working on both iOS and Android.
Added checks to catch feedback that does not match what was said.
What we learned
Useful feedback needs evidence, not just fluent wording.
Voice features need testing across the entire path, from microphone to playback.
What's next for BeforeYouSay
