Inspiration
A REAL LIFE PROBLEM: Activism on college campuses are sometimes not sufficiently effective. We have seen changed being made with absurd mount of effort from the student body. And those underrepresented voices are very often ignored. The difficulty of actualizing an social impact deters meaningful changes from happening.
What it does
BEEF collects underrepresented voices on college campuses in an informal way. Users are assigned to their local institution spheres, where they can view issues other students at their school are concerned about or make their own posts. An upvoting function will rank the posts by popularity, and once a post garners enough traction (e.g.: 40% of students have affirmed the post), it gets posted onto a global page where students at other institutions will be able to view it. The underlying idea is that institutions will grow concerned about their image and become motivated to make a change.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into challenges with branding and had to go through multiple iterations. We struggled to find an identity that reflected the informal yet active mood our brand was based upon but was also unoffensive and suitable to our audiences. It was also difficult to create a functioning page visually.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our functioning prototype is approaching the ideal design concept and our back end/front end designs are coalescing. We are also very proud of the branding identity that we arrived at.
What's next for BEEF
We can think about creating ways to integrate our ideas with existing services. For example, integrating this framework to Facebook pages and events, or finding ways to pull information from them. We recognize that the same effect can be accomplished without necessarily constructing a full framework on our own.
