Inspiration
We were inspired by single parents and other parents unable to read to their children late at night. We were also inspired to encourage children to read more at a young age. Additionally, being read to at a young age is beneficial, leading to a more advanced vocabulary, cognitive development, attention span, and listening skills.
What it does
Our app displays children's picture books. It allows parents to record themselves reading the book and the child to play back the recording when the parent is not around.
How we built it
We built the app using Swift and Firebase for authentication.
Challenges we ran into
We had limited previous experience with the technology stack. Furthermore, we had technical issues since only 2/4 group members had Mac computers to program Swift in and one of those computers died during the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to finish a project and submit with the core functionalities intact. We are all new to hackathons, with only one of us having competed in one before.
What we learned
We became familiar with how to program and structure a Swift app as well as Firebase basics for authentication and databases.
What's next for Bedtime Story
We plan to implement better scalability features by hosting data via Firebase database rather than locally. We also want to use OCR to recognize text on the screen for book upload and speech-to-text to highlight the current word being read. In addition to book upload, we would like to incorporate a bookstore where customers could buy books modified specially for our platform.
