Inspiration

I wanted to build a tool for busy families, where they could easily create a story for bedtime or campside reading, but also a tool for learning new words. With this tool older siblings or grandparents can also generate stories. The standard 'retry' function allows slightly different results for those who like to be re-read the same story over and over again. The story generator is free to use all the key nouns/words or some of them.

What it does

Create your own imaginative story stating:

  • a maximum word count
  • the target audience age
  • your 2 characters
  • your key nouns/words for the story generator to choose from
  • the setting or theme?

How we built it

It is all built in PartyRock with:

  • 6 user inputs: word count, audience age, main character, secondary character, key nouns/words , setting or theme
  • 1 story generator using the above inputs as a prompt
  • 1 image generator using the generated story as a prompt

I have included defaults so that the user has an instant story and they can see what the inputs are like.

Challenges we ran into

  • Kept getting the annoying Captcha's in the middle of intense refactoring
  • Errors with regards to unknown 'filtered' word
  • Unpredictable images generated, but I actually like that 'special feature'

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • a simple, quick, easy to use app for busy people and they don't need to be technically minded

What we learned

Prompts need very specific instructions, but saying that the results can be unpredictable. You can build blocks that can be used by other blocks. In a way build a block with one function only and reuse it. It is a fun addictive platform with lots of potential.

What's next for Bedtime or Campside Story Creator

  • app that can iterate thought the story and create an appropriate image for each chapter - to be more like a conventional story book
  • diversify into the Dungeons and Dragons sector, where adventures could be created
  • diversify into the world of FanFiction
