Inspiration

As new parents, we were overwhelmed by the nightly routine of dressing our baby for sleep—especially figuring out what to dress him in based on changing temperatures. We realized there wasn’t a simple, mobile-first tool to guide parents on safe sleepwear recommendations based on current weather conditions. That's when Bedtime Baby was born: a modern, user-friendly app that helps parents make confident, informed decisions at bedtime.

What it does

Bedtime Baby helps parents dress their babies safely and comfortably for sleep by:

  • Detecting the local temperature (via location services)
  • Recommending appropriate baby sleepwear based on TOG guidelines
  • Educating parents on safe sleeping practices, TOG ratings, and swaddling
  • Supporting both Celsius and Fahrenheit
  • Offering multiple languages for broader accessibility
  • Featuring a dark mode for nighttime use

How we built it

We used React Native and Expo to build a cross-platform mobile app for iOS and Android. Temperature is fetched using location-based weather APIs, and all clothing recommendations are driven by TOG logic and safe sleeping standards. The UI is minimalist and touch-friendly, designed with Figma and inspired by modern parenting apps. Multilingual support and theming (including dark mode) are built-in from the ground up.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing simplicity with flexibility for different climates and sleeping environments
  • Educating users on TOG ratings without overwhelming them with information
  • Ensuring accessibility and usability in both day and night settings
  • Handling fallback logic when location or weather data is unavailable

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully functional MVP during the hackathon with real-time temperature-based logic
  • Designed a friendly, responsive UI that feels intuitive and useful
  • Added multilingual and measurement unit support (Celsius/Fahrenheit)
  • Kept the focus on safe sleep practices without sacrificing ease of use

What we learned

  • TOG-based dressing guidance is not widely understood—we needed to find simple ways to explain it
  • Even a minimalist app benefits from thoughtful UX design, especially for sleep-deprived parents
  • Building with accessibility (dark mode, localization, etc.) in mind early on saves a lot of time later

What's next for Bedtime Baby

  • Partnering with baby clothing brands to link recommended sleepwear directly to trusted products
  • Adding personalized profiles for babies (age, weight, preferences)
  • Incorporating AI to learn from sleep patterns and suggest optimizations
  • Launching on the App Store and Google Play with parental feedback loops
  • Building community-driven FAQs and sleep tips from real parents
