Inspiration
As a parent, I’ve always cherished bedtime storytelling, but I know it can be a challenge to come up with new, engaging tales every night. I wanted to make bedtime special while also helping busy parents. That’s how BedStoryAI was born—an AI-powered platform that crafts unique, personalized bedtime stories for kids of all ages. It's designed to inspire imagination, and allow parents to bond with their children through creative, one-of-a-kind stories.
How we built it
We built BedStoryAI using Next.js, Prisma ORM for database management, and integrated the Gemini AI model to generate text, while replicate.com provides AI-generated book covers. Each story is tailored based on the child’s age, interests, and story type. The app runs on a credit-based SaaS model, where users can generate stories with easy-to-purchase credits.
What I learned
Throughout the development process, we learned the importance of balancing creative freedom and structure. AI storytelling required fine-tuning to ensure the stories were engaging, age-appropriate, and meaningful. We also realized the need for customization options to give parents more control over the type and tone of the stories. Incorporating user feedback was key to shaping the tool into a practical and enjoyable experience.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the AI could create varied, high-quality stories that maintained coherence across different themes and age groups. Another challenge was optimizing the UI to make it intuitive for parents to use and navigate. Additionally, integrating AI-generated images for book covers, while keeping costs manageable, was a learning experience in balancing creativity and budget.
What's next for BedStoryAI
We’re excited about the future of BedStoryAI! Our next steps include expanding customization features, allowing users to choose specific story settings, characters, and moral lessons. We also plan to enhance voice narration, offering parents the option to have their stories read aloud in soothing, human-like voices.
In addition, we're working on developing multilingual support, so children worldwide can enjoy personalized bedtime stories in their native language. We're also exploring partnerships with educational platforms to introduce learning-focused storylines that help kids develop cognitive and emotional skills through engaging narratives.
Our ultimate goal is to make BedStoryAI the go-to resource for parents who want to make bedtime magical, imaginative, and meaningful for their children.
