The Project: BedroomBucks
BedroomBucks is a game in which a player simulates managing their money to ultimately decorate their bedroom. To earn money, the player can go to work, deposit and withdraw from their savings account, and soon, invest in stocks and bonds.
Inspiration
Our team wanted to create a solution to tackle the challenge of educating young women aged 10-15 on money using a game that would wrap the foreign world of finance in a cute, inviting package. One of our team members has a 10-year-old sister, so we created this game with her in mind!
How we built it
The prototyping of the game was done using Figma and the design work was done using ProCreate. The logic and functionality of the web game was implemented using React as the frontend framework, and Typescript as the script language.
Challenges and Accomplishments
Our team had never worked with React nor Typescript before this project. Even the simplest game mechanics, like creating a working button, were a mystery and took a lot of effort to implement. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say every step was a challenge! We grew a lot from this experience. Although not all features were fully implemented, most of the core features are working. We are proud of our amazing designer who drew every component and the entire bedroom, as well as the dedicated developers who really pushed themselves with the tight deadline and new framework!
What we learned
We learned from this experience that there is a lot of designing, planning and architecting work behind the process of game development. We also had the opportunity to work with and understand React components and props on a much deeper level.
