🧠 Inspiration BedfordLearn was born from the lived experience of Fiokedu Ofonime Ekpo, a dedicated Nigerian educator working with children who have special needs. In her years of service, she saw firsthand how disconnected traditional education systems are from the everyday realities of Nigerian students—especially those with learning differences, poor connectivity, or language barriers. After struggling to find culturally aware, inclusive, and technologically advanced tools that could actually engage Nigerian students at their level, she knew something had to change.

What began as a dream to reach her own learners has now evolved into BedfordLearn: an AI-powered, voice-interactive, role-based learning platform that brings authentic Nigerian voices, languages, and context into the world of modern education.

🚧 What We Learned Through building BedfordLearn, we learned how important it is to design technology with empathy, especially in education. We realized that Nigerian students learn differently, and technology should support—not replace—the cultural nuances, languages, and values that define them.

We also learned how to:

Combine AI tools like OpenAI and ElevenLabs to make voice-powered, intelligent tutors come alive.

Leverage Supabase for real-time, scalable back-end development with built-in authentication and security.

Build a fully responsive, accessible platform using React, TypeScript, TailwindCSS, and Vite—even in low-connectivity environments.

🛠️ How We Built It The project was built using:

React 18 + TypeScript for robust, scalable frontend development

Supabase for authentication, database, and real-time updates

OpenAI GPT-3.5 for personalized AI tutoring aligned with the Nigerian curriculum

ElevenLabs API for authentic Nigerian-accented voice synthesis

Framer Motion, Zustand, and Tailwind CSS for smooth UI and state handling

Netlify for simple, automated deployment

Key modules include:

A secure Google login system with role-based access (parent/student)

AI-powered tutors with distinct Nigerian personalities: Miss Zara, Prof. Ayodele, Uncle Chima

A multilingual system supporting English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin

Voice-first quizzes, offline access, and gamified study progress

🎯 Challenges We Faced Building culturally intelligent AI – Designing Nigerian-accented, curriculum-aware AI tutors required extensive custom prompting and language model alignment.

Voice technology in low-bandwidth areas – We had to implement offline support and optimize voice data streaming to suit Nigeria’s infrastructure limitations.

Balancing user flows – Ensuring that parents and students had clear, separate, but interconnected dashboards was tough but crucial.

Accessibility and inclusion – Making the platform usable by children with special needs demanded serious UX effort, especially around navigation, contrast, and font scaling.
