Inspiration
Becky was inspired by my own struggles with skin insecurity and the frustration of not knowing what was actually happening to my skin. I often turned to Reddit and saw countless people posting photos of their breakouts, redness, and texture, desperately seeking help from strangers. The advice was inconsistent, overwhelming, and sometimes harmful. I realised people needed a safer, kinder, more private way to understand their skin—without judgement, shame, or misinformation. Becky was created to give users the clarity and reassurance I always wished I had.
What it does
Becky is an AI-powered personal skincare companion that analyses a photo of your skin to identify skin type, concerns, and simple actionable steps. It provides gentle, easy-to-understand guidance—not medical claims or fear-based messaging. Users take a quick photo of the area they’re concerned about, and Becky returns a personalised skin analysis, a health score, and a tailored routine they can follow right away. Becky is designed to empower users with clarity while keeping the tone supportive, calm, and judgement-free.
How we built it
We built Becky using React Native for a mobile-friendly experience, integrating Gemini AI for image analysis and natural language interpretation. The onboarding, routine builder, and skin analysis screens were designed with a soft gradient aesthetic to make the experience feel comforting and approachable. AI processes the user’s image, extracts visible patterns, and combines this with onboarding inputs to generate a personalised analysis. The entire flow was structured to be fast, private, and intuitive while maintaining clear disclaimers that the tool is not providing medical advice. As the project grows, we’re preparing to turn Becky into a fully deployed mobile app so users can access their personalised skincare guidance seamlessly on iOS.
Challenges we ran into
We faced several challenges, including making the onboarding flow cohesive after partial design updates, ensuring accurate skin analysis without giving medical diagnosis, and building a UI that feels reassuring rather than clinical. Another challenge was balancing AI-powered insights while maintaining strong safety disclaimers to avoid overstepping into medical advice territory and ensuring that it is accurate.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a functional AI skin analysis tool that feels genuinely supportive and kind. The redesigned onboarding flow now feels calming and human, and the analysis results provide clarity without overwhelming the user. We're also proud of turning a personal insecurity into a tool that can help others feel more confident.
What we learned
We learned how powerful and accessible AI can be for personal wellness tools when used responsibly. We also learned the importance of tone—users need reassurance, not judgement. Additionally, we discovered how critical consistent UI design is for shaping the emotional experience, especially in a space as sensitive as skincare. Working across multiple AI builders taught us flexibility, problem-solving, and the importance of staying centred on the end user even when tools break or fail. One of the biggest lessons was the value of proper planning and prioritisation—focusing on one feature at a time allowed us to maintain clarity, avoid overwhelm, and build a far more cohesive product experience.
What's next for Becky
Next, we plan to add product compatibility checks, a more advanced routine builder, and long-term skin progress tracking. We also want to refine the analysis model with dermatologist-reviewed guidance. Ultimately, Becky aims to become the go-to companion for anyone looking to understand their skin gently, privately, and confidently.
