Problem

- Accessing beauty services such as salons and parlours are still a nightmare to many disabled people due to multiple barriers from inaccessible physical environment to various stereotyping and assumptions.
- They are denied access to various kinds of essential services either due to lack of physical accessibility or because of discomfort, unfamiliarity, or prejudices regarding their disabilities.
- Negative attitudes and stereotypes towards individuals with disabilities are leading to discrimination and denial of service.
Our solution
BeautyBeyondBarrier is an assistive mobile application that aims to assist people in finding beauty services, salons and stylists based on their accessibility needs.
Our application has two sections; one which can be used by the users for finding beauty solutions and the other by the stylists.
From the user side of the application, the application provides options to search for salons and stylists; select slots and book for an appointment. It also offers facility to chat and consult online with the stylists which would benefit a lot of disabled people to access services from their convenient places.

User flow
Onboarding users to the app also includes providing a wide range of accessibility needs & preferences that might be missing in the currently available solutions but are very important for some of us.

Being able to find salons that are accessible is super important to ensure that we do not see surprises that affect the experience. Features like virtual pre-consulting are helpful for those who need consultation on the services.
We also aim to encourage more salons to provide basic accessibility needs like noiseless dryers and tools etc.

We can book appointments with the stylists available near us who can provide service at the comfort of our home.

Virtual consultations with audio & video calling, chat with stylists & speech recognition across the app.

Introducing Ally
Ally by BeautyBeyondBarrier believes that training staffs on how to serve and interact with the disabled community provides the disabled people with a greater beauty experience. The main idea of this is to break the negative attitudes and stereotypes towards individuals with disabilities.

Stylists can pick courses and get their ally trained badge. Salons can also assign courses to their stylists to ensure that there are more people to service people with disabilities without any barriers. Users can filter for these trained professionals. In a long term, as we have more trained stylists, this would reduce the premium rates paid by disabled people to get the basic beauty services done.

The ultimate goal of our solution is inclusion and not accommodation. One of the biggest challenges was streamlining our ideas that would could be utilised by people with different skills and needs.
We are looking to create a delightful and inclusive application.
What's next for Beauty Beyond Barriers
Currently, we have built the responsive app that runs on mobile browsers. We are looking to build a full fledged hybrid mobile and web application.
Improving and expanding the functionalities around ally is also in our future scope. Including virtual consultations on beauty products, choosing products that would work for different skin types etc are other features that are planned.
We are also planning to create an alexa skill for finding, booking appointments, running audio training materials for ally, etc.
