Inspiration
Keeping track of classes, cgpa, notes, and paperwork is harder than it should be. We wanted organization to feel effortless. Say “Add Math 101 on Monday and Wednesday from 2 to 3 PM,” and your timetable appears. Our aim is simple: turn plain English into a beautiful, functional schedule with notes and sketches in one place.
What it does
Gemini Schedule Maker is a student planning space. Say your classes in plain English and it builds your weekly timetable. That timetable becomes your knowledge bank: add notes, links, and Excalidraw sketches to each class so everything stays in one place. It is fast, mobile ready, works offline with auto save to IndexedDB, and lets you export to PNG, JPEG, or SVG with one click. In the future, we plan to add Gemini powered context and search across the knowledge bank so finding concepts and past notes takes seconds.
How we built it
We combined Chrome AI for on device processing with Firebase AI in the cloud. Simple requests run locally for instant responses, while complex edits and tool calls use the cloud for reliable course operations such as add, update, and delete. State management uses lightweight Zustand for snappy performance, and the design leans on clear typography and smooth motion. Excalidraw scenes persist between sessions, and a floating action button makes creating new notes instant.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing local and cloud AI was hard. We had to decide what runs on the device and what runs in the cloud. Turning plain English into schedule data, handling overlaps, and clearing up vague dates pushed us to improve our parsing and checks. Excalidraw had to feel seamless, offline had to be solid, and auto save had to be dependable.
Accomplishments we are proud of
Building a truly conversational interface. The app switches seamlessly between the cloud model and the on device model. The timetable looks great and exports cleanly. Excalidraw feels native, offline support is solid, and the whole experience is fast and delightful. Most importantly, we showed that AI can make academic organization enjoyable.
What we learned
AI powered UX needs thoughtful orchestration between local and cloud capabilities. Natural language parsing demands robust error handling and clear feedback. Performance matters, because lightweight state and smart caching are the difference between sluggish and snappy. Design and AI work best together, since a beautiful interface amplifies intelligent features.
What is next for Gemini Schedule Maker
We are exploring tool calling that can edit Excalidraw automatically. Think Gemini drawing flowcharts for study sessions, calculating CGPA on demand, and building personalized study schedules with smart reminders. With multimodal support, students could paste rough handwritten notes and have Gemini turn them into polished diagrams. These are a thousand of the possibilities opened by combining on device smarts with Firebase cloud intelligence, creating an extensible platform that grows with student needs.
