Restaurants and food businesses struggle with food photography. Professional food photographers cost hundreds of dollars per session, and phone photos never look good enough for menus, delivery apps, or social media. We wanted to solve this problem by making professional-quality food photos accessible to every restaurant, at a fraction of the cost.

What it does

Beautiful Food transforms ordinary phone photos of food into professional, magazine-quality images in under 30 seconds. Upload any phone photo of a dish, choose from 19 professional photography styles (delivery-app optimized, dark & moody, bright & airy, editorial magazine, and more), and download your enhanced photo instantly.

How we built it

Tech Stack:

  • Frontend: Next.js 15 with App Router, React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4
  • Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL + Storage + Auth), Supabase Edge Functions
  • AI Processing: Replicate API with Flux model family for image enhancement
  • Payments: Stripe for credit purchases
  • Deployment: Vercel

The core pipeline: user uploads a food photo → we generate a professional photography prompt based on their chosen style → Replicate's Flux model enhances the image → result is delivered back in under 30 seconds.

Challenges we ran into

  • Fine-tuning the AI prompts to consistently produce professional-looking results across different dish types and lighting conditions
  • Building a reliable webhook system for async AI processing
  • Designing the credit system to be atomic and fraud-resistant

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned

Prompt engineering for food photography is an art. The difference between amateur and professional food photos comes down to lighting, composition, and styling cues — and these can be encoded into AI prompts.
