Inspiration

We live in a world where women and other gender minorities face mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem due to societal stigma, discrimination, and the complexities of navigating their identities, leading to self-destructive thoughts and behaviors. I, myself, and many others fell victim to the negative side of gender minorities, unable to express our insecurities to anyone out of fear of judgement. Hence, we stay in our little bubble hoping the thoughts go away, and let me tell you, the thoughts get louder. From experience, the only way to omit the negative thoughts is to be reminded about the beauty and benefits of being a gender minority, and that’s how Beau was born.

What it does

Beau provides daily reminders that highlight the unique strengths and perspectives of gender minorities. Each day, users receive uplifting messages that affirm their identity and celebrate the diversity within the gender spectrum. Besides that, Beau provides a comprehensive resource hub, tailored information, and support for various gender identities. From articles and guides on self-care to mental health resources and advocacy groups, beau ensure users have access to the tools they need to navigate their journey confidently. Beau also includes an anonymous chat feature where users can connect with others who share similar experiences. This is a platform for discussion, support, and sharing—allowing users to talk openly about their feelings, challenges, and triumphs without fear of judgment.

How we built it

I built the app using the resources and tools provided by Figma.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was the time provided. It didn't help that the software I used made everything laggy so editing, recording, and uploading was very slow and time-consuming. That's why I wasn't able to include all my planned features for the app such as an option to change your gender.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall, with the given amount of time, I'm proud of how it looks and functions. I'm most proud of the logo I came up with because it was a last-minute design and it fits the theme very well I think.

What we learned

I learned that I should use another filming and editing software because iMovie is outdated. I also learned the time and effort it takes to make a simple app.

What's next for beau

My plans for beau, if it ever takes off, are adding in the features I previously planned, adding a larger variety of daily affirmations while updating the resources hub to have relevant information and resources, and diversifying the chat box to allow users to communicate with different gender communities aside from their own.
