Inspiration
We were inspired by the people who surround us. Our team spends time with elderly family and friends on a daily basis, so we wanted to create a product that would not only benefit them, but anyone else who uses it.
What it does
With the plethora of skincare and makeup products that are being released constantly, we all know it can be intimidating to navigate a crowded website and choose products that would work for your skin. We created Beau Assist with an intuitive and simple design, to help users create a tailored beauty routine and most importantly build confidence. It lives as a widget on the homepage of your favorite beauty website, and asks a few questions (skin type, age, etc.) Beau Assist will build you a customized skin care or makeup routine based on your answers, and provides you with an informational in depth step-by-step routine, easy one step ‘add to cart’ features, and also provide tutorials on application. With the elderly community as our inspiration, we wanted to be sure that it was simple, and useful to find products that work on mature skin types, which we found was a common difficulty - but it is friendly for all ages!
How we built it
The product was initially designed in Figma, and developed using Java, React, MongoDB and TailwindCSS.
Challenges we ran into
Our team faced a few challenges. We had many members join the team and drop off, leaving us with one designer and four developers. We initially started a project creating a widget that would customize your website to different accessibility settings, but with research found that the product already existed. About halfway through, we pivoted and came together to ideate a product that hits close to home for us, since we all have a ton of experience with the elderly community, we wanted to keep them at the forefront.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to be able to overcome obstacles and create a product that holds a lot of meaning with us.
What we learned
Product management, time management are incredibly important for any project. Life always happens, so it is critical to be able to factor in and work around obstacles. We also wanted to be sure to have conversations with the people were inspired by.
What's next for Beau Assist
Because the timeframe for this project was limited, we were not able to design and build out all of the features we would have liked to. Moving forward, we will refine the design and the usability, do testing on users and adjust accordingly. We believe our product can be an important tool for everyone, and will continue to work on it!
