Inspiration

The problem we hope our application could help in solving is decreasing the use of papers. As we know that one of the main sources of papers is trees, so decreasing the use of papers would have a good impact on our environment. As in the United States only, there are up to ten million trees are used to make the paper. On the other hand, if they skipped receipts, twelve billion pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) would be saved, which is equivalent to one million cars on the road.

What it does

Replacing the printing of receipts by generating QR codes that the customer can scan by his mobile camera without the need for any special software to have his receipt on his mobile. Another way of getting the receipt is by email. This idea would have a measurable impact on the global health and commerce.

How we built it

We build a web application using MERN stack that simulates the process of adding products to the market database then retrieving them at the buying process. Other technologies we used are Github and Heruko to deploy our application. Moreover, we used a UPC barcode scanner to make the simulation of the selling process more realistic.

Challenges we ran into

Some security issues with node mailer when sending the receipts by email, but now it is solved.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We own a patent of this idea with our names. Taking a step in the path of the paperless society.

What we learned

Working remotely in teams.

What's next for BeatTheReceipt

Spreading our idea through markets to reach our goal of a clean environment.
