Inspiration
BeatSaber, but on your computer. We wanted to create a rhytm-based game you could play on your keyboard, or better, physical button
What it does
Beat Forge turns any song into a playable rhythm game. Drop in an MP3 and it listens to the drums and builds a four lane chart. Play along with the song , watch the notes fall and get better with every run!
How we built it
Accepts an audio file, separates vocals and other instruments from the drums. Splits the drums into three ranges, assign each range to a lane and play the song synced to the keys falling down.\
Challenges we ran into
parsing audio files is complicated, Sounds overlap a lot and decisions about which to keep/remove had to be made. Connecting the game portion to the backend was difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Any mp3 can be made into a playable game got a working demo hardware integration takes it from a keyboard game into one that is 3D and real-life
What we learned
Learned a lot about python, how to use librosa to parse an audio file, how to convert an onsets.json to a chart.json using rules to make the game playable, how to connect hardware to our software game, how to resolve merge conflicts and how to break up a software project into different responsibilities to work in parralel, how to manage a team in a way that people can work on three stages of the project simultaneously.
What's next for BeatForge
better hardware implementation, song database, easy/medium/hard mode, streak counter, UI improvement.
