This is the welcome screen. The student is welcomed by a fuzzy bear and prompted to login with their name and age.
After logging in, the student is able to to choose from a variety of lessons, where it shows their progress for each section.
When choosing a section the student first begins with math questions on fun topics using fruit to make it life like and easy to understand.
After finishing the fruit lessons, the student gets to interact with the BEARS teacher and can ask questions with real time feedback.

Building Educational Adventures and Resourceful Studies

Inspiration The inspiration for BEARS stemmed from our desire to make quality education accessible to children in conflict zones or those who cannot attend school regularly. We wanted to create an engaging, interactive learning experience that could reach kids, helping them to continue their education despite challenging circumstances.

What it does BEARS AI is an educational app that integrates advanced AI to act as a personal assistant, guiding children through math problems, both basic and word problems. BEARS offers a game like appearance rewards points, and personalized support to help kids learn effectively.

How we built it We built BEARS using a MERN Stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js) to ensure a responsive and friendly frontend as well as a sturdy and reliable backend. Furthermore, we integrated HUME AI's API to provide advanced voice control capabilities. We chose HUME AI because of its ability to detect emotions and react accordingly to user input, enhancing the personalized learning experience and working to keep students engaged.

Challenges we ran into

It was a challenging but rewarding experience to work with HUME AI. Creating our system prompt took trial and error, but it was a lot of fun. We faced issues where every single feature we implemented seemed to cause a new bug. Additionally, we had external problems, staying awake and staying focused with Taylor Swift karaoke down the hall were two that stuck out.

Accomplishments that we're Proud of We're proud of creating a functional and engaging app within the limited timeframe of the hackathon. Successfully integrating AI to provide an engaging learning experiences was a significant achievement.

What we learned We learned about how valuable interpersonal AI can be when creating personalized learning experiences. We gained valuable experience in integrating AI with educational content and enhancing user engagement through gamification and EVI's empathetic voice control.

What's next for BEARS AI The next step for BEARS is to deploy a website and mobile app so that our educational service is easily accessible for anyone in need. We also are looking to expand its subject offerings beyond math, incorporating areas like music, geography, science, and languages. We aim to refine the AI to provide even more personalized and effective assistance. Ultimately, we hope to make BEARS a comprehensive educational tool that can support children’s learning journeys worldwide.
