Inspiration
BOOMBOOMBEAN draws inspiration from Super Smash Bros — simple rules, fast pacing, and more chaos with more players. I wanted a world where players can jump in instantly and feel the tension and humor of pushing, exploding, and falling within the first 30 seconds. It is designed as a lightweight party game meant to be fun immediately.
Gameplay
In this circular arena, players have one goal: climb upward and hold the center. The closer you stay to the crown, the faster your score rises — but don’t fall off! Bombs spawn randomly, platforms move or shrink, and other players will constantly throw bombs at you. With only movement and throwing mechanics, each match becomes unpredictable, perfect for chaotic fun with friends. Let’s see who can stay the Bean King the longest.
How we built it
BOOMBOOMBEAN was created during the Meta Horizon Worlds Creator Academy, where I built the first prototype in just two days. It was simple but instantly addictive. After seeing friends laugh through the chaos during early tests, I continued refining the idea into a true party-ready experience.
Simple games require precise tuning. I optimized the systems so multiplayer runs smoothly, using an overlap-texture approach so the entire scene works on a single 1K texture, and simplifying collision where possible to reduce load. For visuals, I explored a composition that highlights the central objective and eventually adopted a beanstalk-like design. GenAI helped generate early audio and art assets, allowing the style to take shape quickly.
The biggest challenge was achieving “smooth chaos.” I tuned explosion timing, scoring rhythm, impact strength, friction, and boundary rules to make every hit feel fair, funny, and instantly recoverable. The result is a game that becomes more fun with more players — unpredictable, chaotic, and endlessly replayable.
What's next for BOOMBOOMBEAN
Next, I plan to add more upgradeable bomb types, more outrageous party mechanics, and even wilder platform behaviors. We also aim to expand social features, including team modes and customizable rooms, ensuring BOOMBOOMBEAN becomes more chaotic and more fun with every update.
