Inspiration

The global remittance industry is plagued by high fees, long transaction times, and limited accessibility, especially in developing regions. Recognizing the potential of the Bitcoin Lightning Network to address these challenges, we were inspired to create Beam. Beam aims to provide a fast, low-cost, and secure solution for cross-border payments, empowering individuals and businesses to send and receive money effortlessly across borders. With remittance fees averaging 7% globally and the market worth over $600 billion annually, there's a significant opportunity for disruption.

What it does

Beam is a mobile application that facilitates instant, low-cost, and secure cross-border remittances using the Bitcoin Lightning Network. Users can send and receive money globally by scanning QR codes, with transactions processed off-chain to ensure minimal fees and rapid settlement. Beam supports multiple currencies with automatic conversion, enhancing the usability and accessibility of the platform for users worldwide.

How we built it

We built Beam using a combination of advanced technologies to optimize performance and user experience:

Integration with the Lightning Network: Beam integrates deeply with the Bitcoin Lightning Network to provide a seamless, efficient, and cost-effective remittance service. The core integration involves setting up and managing Lightning Network nodes using Polar, which allows Beam to facilitate off-chain transactions. These transactions are faster and cheaper compared to traditional on-chain Bitcoin transactions.

Technical Implementation:

  • Node Management: Beam uses Polar to create and manage multiple Lightning nodes. This setup ensures optimal performance, high reliability, and efficient transaction routing.
