Inspiration
We wanted to create a simple, one-click platform that connects people in urgent need with local help. From food shortages to mental health support and personal safety, real-world crises often lack a fast, accessible digital solution. BeaconAid aims to bridge that gap and make help just a click away.
What it does
BeaconAid allows users to:
- Find help instantly — food, mental health support, or emergency safety resources.
- Offer help safely — let others know they can provide food, shelter, or volunteer support.
- Locate resources nearby — listings include city/ZIP info and quick links to maps or contact.
All interactions are designed to be fast, clear, and actionable, making it a reliable lifeline for anyone in need.
How we built it
- Created a clean, accessible website with responsive design.
- Used forms and listing cards to simulate real-time help availability, with city/ZIP for location awareness.
- Incorporated a safety-first approach for sensitive resources like mental health and emergency support.
- Designed intuitive navigation to make it possible for users to get or offer help within one click.
Challenges we ran into
Time was a major constraint — it was exam season, so we had very limited hours to dedicate to the project. This meant we had to focus on core features first, prioritizing impact and functionality over extra polish or advanced integrations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional community help platform in a very short timeframe.
- Created a system that is intuitive and easy to navigate for users in urgent situations.
- Developed a cohesive, impactful demo that clearly communicates real-world usefulness.
What we learned
- Prioritization is key in short timelines — focusing on high-impact, core features is more valuable than adding many bells and whistles.
- User experience matters tremendously, especially in platforms designed for emergency or sensitive situations.
- Even a small, well-thought-out MVP can demonstrate real-world societal impact effectively.
What's next for BeaconAid
- Implement real-time, location-based help listings with verified users.
- Add dynamic resource filtering (e.g., food type, mental health specialization, emergency severity).
- Expand accessibility and language support to reach wider communities.
- Integrate secure accounts and notifications so help requests and offers can be tracked safely and reliably.
