Beacon is a website that focuses on providing mental health resources.
The site includes a generalized mental health survey on depression that is based off of multiple reliable mental health survey sites.
We plan to expand our site to include other mental health disorders further down the road.
Inspiration
Mental illnesses begin manifesting themselves in 50 percent of patients by the age of 14 and 75 percent of patients by the age of 25. Despite the early onset, between 76 and 85 percent of serious cases do not receive treatment in low and middle-income nations. That range drops to between 35 and 50 percent in high incomes countries, yet it still represents a huge margin.
Beacon represents a guidelight for those who do not know where to turn for mental health resources.
What it does
Beacon is a website that focuses on providing mental health resources. The site includes a generalized mental health survey on depression that is based on multiple reliable mental health survey sites.
We plan to expand our site to include other mental health disorders further down the road.
How we built it
The main website was built using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and bootstrap and we also implemented some APIs in the website too. The logos and banner for the website were designed and created in Figma and our presentation video and slide deck were created using Microsoft PowerPoint.
Challenges we ran into
This was our team's first chance working with HTML, CSS, Javascript, bootstrap and Google API which is essentially entire coding portion of our project. This meant that we had to learn many new things on the spot and to use said knowledge to implement a working website with places API and general Google API tools (geocode).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud that we have accomplished so much in so little time especially since this is also a very busy weekend for us in terms of schoolwork.
What we learned
As stated above, our team had to learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, bootstrap and working with APIs pretty much from scratch. This meant quite a lot hours of researching and learning to figure out what we were doing.
What's next for Beacon
We plan to add to the surveying portion of the website by including more mental health surveys other than Major Depressive Disorder. This includes social anxiety disorder (4.6% of Americans), Post-traumatic stress disorder which is also known as PTSD (3.5% of Americans), Generalized anxiety disorder (3%), Obsessive-compulsive disorder which is also known as OCD (2% of Americans), and bi-polar disorder (2.6% of Americans). We also plan to contact the psychology department at Queen's University (our teams school) to review the surveys and to improve them to be more accurate for the user.
