Inspiration
This project started from our Phi Theta Kappa chapter Beta Zeta Nu college project. We talked to our college president about the largest issues facing the campus and one pressing concern was the lack of students being knowledgeable about their resources as well as them being readily accessible. Many students fall behind or fall short of their aspirations simply because they don't have a support system. An app seemed like the perfect solution. While this demo is a great starting point, we are still planning to fully realize it. We already have promising support with our deans, our president, and the IT department.
What it does
This app will be a complete student resource app. For now it has a schedule feature, a homepage that shows news and to-dos, and a profile page. Eventually this would come with more fleshed out features.
How we built it
We built it on VSCode using flutter and dart.
Challenges we ran into
It was our first time working with flutter and dart so it was a huge learning curve. We even ran into major problems just setting up our emulators. Every step of the way was a unique learning experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how much work we put into this demo. We definitely had a few sleepless nights. We are also proud of how it looks. We think that it is a great first step into fully developing the app.
What we learned
We learned how to use flutter and dart, how to run phone emulators through Android Studio, how to better collaborate on GitHub, and how to plan and coordinate as a team.
What's next for Beacon
We are planning to fully flesh out this app alongside our college administration and give them updates on where we are with the IT department as a huge resource. Since this app is something that would be used by college campuses, we need to make sure its safe so we will need to install a cybersecurity system like the one currently used at SMCCD from Cisco. We will continue to build the app with the rest of the engineering and robotics club software engineers.
