Inspiration
Our inspiration came from one of our team members’ moms who works in an assisted living facility and has seen firsthand how difficult it can be for elderly and disabled individuals to understand and keep track of their medical information. When people cannot interpret their records, they cannot advocate for themselves. This gap in understanding has led to preventable medical errors and even deaths simply because patients could not communicate or understand critical details about their health.
Beacon was built to change that.
What It Does
Beacon is an AI-Native medical-literacy and record-management platform designed specifically for older adults and individuals with disabilities. It doesn't just store charts, it prepares patients for doctor visits and helps them make sense of what happened afterwards.
Users can upload their medical records, and Beacon’s AI automatically extracts data and generates patient profiles along with clear, plain-language summaries of their conditions and other relevant health information. Beacon also allows verified providers to log in and upload medical records, enabling caregivers and patients to partner and work together on managing health information in one place. Our user experience is designed with accessibility at the core, offering features such as larger-font modes, high-contrast settings, and provider collaboration tools for patients who need additional support. Beacon serves as a centralized, AI-enhanced health hub offering:
Dashboard View: A simple snapshot of a user’s health, including upcoming appointments, active medications, recent results, and outstanding action items.
Appointments: Users can record appointments and receive transcriptions, AI-generated summaries, real-time insights, and suggested questions to ask, such as potential medication interactions or missing follow-ups. Transcripts are available for future reference and to enable providers to collaborate on patient health.
Medications: Clear schedules outlining what medications to take and when, supported by AI-driven safety context.
Action Items: Automated reminders for tasks like refilling prescriptions or scheduling follow-ups.
Results: Organized lab and diagnostic results with AI-produced explanations and comparisons to normal ranges. Medical Records Storage: A secure, central repository for all health documents.
Chat Assistant: A context-aware HIPAA-compliant AI assistant that uses the user’s real medical history to answer questions before, during, and after doctor visits, explain what was said in plain language, and provide personalized, reliable guidance.
Together, these AI-driven features empower users, regardless of age, condition, or digital literacy, to finally understand and manage their own care with confidence.
How We Built It
Beacon was built primarily using Lovable, with additional human-led code edits to support caregiver workflows, advanced UI features, and accessibility requirements for older adults.
Challenges We Faced
Our main challenge was striking the right balance between robust medical functionality and simplicity. Given our core audience, every screen, flow, and interaction needed to be intuitive and accessible while still providing the depth required to meaningfully support medical comprehension.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
We are proud of how collaboratively we worked as a team to build something that has the potential to meaningfully improve people’s lives. Each member contributed critical ideas, technical skills, and user empathy to bring Beacon to life.
What We Learned
We learned that the barrier to turning a meaningful idea into a functioning product is lower than ever. Leveraging tools like Lovable, combined with thoughtful team collaboration, allowed us to build a complex, purpose-driven tool in a short timeframe.
What’s Next for Beacon
With our team’s healthcare and security experience, we understand strict regulations and would address them. We’d add features for our first users, especially around accessibility and ease of use, while keeping end-to-end security our top priority.
