Inspiration

Earlier this year, we heard about the Palisades Fire that went all throughout Los Angeles, which forced thousands to evacuate with little notice. Many found themselves stranded, without shelter, transportation, food, water, medical or basic supplies. Even with the help of the government and local first responders, community-driven aid played the most critical role in getting people the resources they need. However, most coordination happened through scattered group chats and social media posts, making it difficult to find help efficiently.

This inspired us to create Beacon—an emergency aid network that connects people when disasters strike. Whether it’s wildfires, floods, power outages, or any crisis, Beacon ensures that people can offer and find critical resources in real time.

What it does

Beacon is a community-driven emergency relief platform where users can:

  • List available resources, such as shelter, basic supplies, transportation, medical, food, and water based on location
  • Search and filter by resource type and available/unavailable
  • Contact owners of resources
  • Add resources to your watchlist
  • Edit/delete your own resources ## How we built it
  • React frontend
  • Express.js backend
  • PostgreSQL/Neon database
  • Tailwind

Challenges we ran into

  • Upload & display images
  • Image scrolling w/carousel

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Highly polished MVP
  • Impactful applications
  • Modern UI/UX

What we learned

  • Express.js
  • CRUD

What's next for Beacon

  • Adding public user profiles
  • Messaging platform
