Inspiration - The inspiration for Beacon came from witnessing the immense suffering and unmet needs of war victims around the world. Humanitarian law outlines clear protections and rights for those affected by conflict, but in practice, accessing help, information, and resources can be overwhelming, especially in chaotic environments. We wanted to create a tool that empowers victims, connects them to vital aid, and ensures their rights and needs are respected—turning humanitarian principles into practical, accessible support.

What it does - Beacon is a comprehensive emergency response app designed for individuals affected by armed conflict. It provides:

Immediate access to emergency contacts (local and international aid organizations, medical services, legal aid). Step-by-step guidance on securing food, water, shelter, and medical care. Legal rights information based on international humanitarian law, tailored to the user’s location and status. SOS alert system to notify trusted contacts and nearby responders. Resource locator for nearby shelters, clinics, food distribution points, and safe zones. Mental health support with self-help tools and connections to remote counselors. Family reunification assistance for separated families. Multilingual support to overcome language barriers.

How we built it -

We built Beacon using a cross-platform mobile framework to ensure accessibility on both Android and iOS devices, even in low-connectivity environments. The app integrates:

Offline-first architecture for critical features. Secure, encrypted communication for user privacy. Real-time data feeds from humanitarian organizations and local authorities. Geolocation services for mapping resources and sending SOS alerts. AI-driven chat assistant to guide users through emergencies and answer questions about their rights. Collaborative partnerships with NGOs, legal experts, and medical professionals to keep information accurate and up-to-date.

Challenges we ran into -

Connectivity: Ensuring the app functions reliably in areas with limited or no internet access. Security: Protecting sensitive user data from potential misuse in conflict zones. Localization: Adapting the app for multiple languages, cultures, and legal systems. Trust: Building credibility so users feel safe using the app, especially in regions with distrust of technology or authorities. Integration: Coordinating with diverse humanitarian organizations and updating resource databases in real-time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of -

User-centric design: Survivors and aid workers participated in every stage, ensuring the app truly meets real-world needs. Offline capabilities: Critical features work even without internet, a lifeline in many conflict zones. Rapid SOS response: Early pilots have already helped reunite families and connect hundreds of users to urgent medical care. Legal empowerment: Thousands of users have accessed rights information, helping them seek fair treatment and protection. Recognition: Beacon was recognized by major humanitarian organizations for its innovation and impact.

What we learned -

Empathy is essential: Listening to war victims and aid workers shaped every feature and decision. Simplicity saves lives: In emergencies, clear, intuitive design is more important than complex features. Collaboration multiplies impact: Working with NGOs, legal experts, and local communities was key to building trust and ensuring relevance. Adaptability matters: Needs change rapidly in crises; the app must evolve just as quickly.

What's next for "BEACON: Emergency Response System"

Expanding partnerships with more local and international aid organizations for broader coverage. AI-driven multilingual support to break down language barriers even further. Satellite connectivity integration for true global reach, even in the most remote areas. Community reporting tools to crowdsource safe zones, hazards, and emerging needs in real time. Enhanced mental health resources with 24/7 remote counseling and peer support. Continuous feedback loops with users to keep improving and adapting Beacon to new challenges.

Beacon is committed to shining a light in the darkest times—empowering war victims with the information, support, and hope they need to survive and rebuild.
